Thailand Suspends US-Brokered Peace Deal with Cambodia After Border Mine Explosion

Thailand has suspended the implementation of a US-brokered peace deal with neighboring Cambodia after two Thai soldiers were injured in a landmine explosion near the border.

Thai Prime Minister Anutan Chanveerakul announced that all measures under the agreement would be put on hold until Thailand’s demands are met, though he did not disclose the specifics of these demands.

The Cambodian government, however, reaffirmed its commitment to the peace deal, which was intended to secure lasting stability after border clashes in July that resulted in over 40 deaths and displaced more than 300,000 civilians.

The agreement was signed in October in Malaysia in a ceremony attended by the US President, aiming to end recurring border tensions. Despite this, Thailand has so far refused to formally recognize it as a binding peace deal.

Thailand has previously accused Cambodia of violating the ceasefire and laying new landmines, allegations that Cambodia strongly denies. The recent mine blast underscores the fragility of the peace process and ongoing mistrust between the two nations.

Analysts warn that the suspension could further escalate border tensions and delay stabilization efforts, leaving thousands of civilians in border areas vulnerable.
