At least 22 individuals, including women and children, have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza as Israeli forces intensify their ground assault in the area. The attack occurred amid an ongoing offensive launched a week prior, purportedly aimed at halting the regrouping of the Palestinian group Hamas.
As the death toll rises, the Israeli military has issued evacuation orders for northern Gaza, directing residents near Jabalia to relocate to the south. Reports from the Palestinian news agency Wafa indicate that Israeli fighter jets bombed a multistorey apartment block on Friday night, resulting in 22 fatalities, at least 30 injuries, and 14 people still missing, believed to be buried under the rubble.
Witnesses report hearing powerful explosions in northern Gaza, with many casualties arriving at hospitals in critical condition. The Kamal Adwan Hospital, already strained by the ongoing siege, is dangerously low on fuel and has been ordered by Israeli soldiers to cease operations. Despite the orders, medical staff continue to treat the wounded, including newborns.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has expressed grave concerns over the deteriorating food security in northern Gaza, with no food aid entering the area since October 1. Main crossings have been closed, and vital food distribution points and bakeries have been forced to shut down due to ongoing violence. The last remaining supplies in the north are being rapidly depleted, leading to fears of widespread starvation among displaced families.
As the humanitarian situation worsens, MSF project coordinator Sarah Vuylsteke reported that no one is allowed to enter or leave Jabalia, highlighting the precarious position of five MSF staff trapped in the area. Reports also indicate that the overcrowded humanitarian zones designated by Israel have been repeatedly attacked, further complicating relief efforts.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in devastating consequences for the civilian population of Gaza, with the Ministry of Health reporting that at least 42,175 people have been killed and 98,336 wounded since the onset of Israeli attacks following the Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.
