Tremors Jolt KP as 5.9-Magnitude Quake Strikes Hindu Kush Region

Islamabad – Tremors were felt across several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday morning after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The PMD reported that the earthquake originated at 8:17am PKT at a depth of 195 kilometres, with coordinates 36.51°N latitude and 70.98°E longitude. The epicentre was traced to the Hindu Kush mountain range, a region known for frequent seismic activity due to its location at the intersection of multiple tectonic plates.

Residents in Chitral, Peshawar and Swat reported feeling the tremors, while the Pukhtunkhwa Times confirmed that “mild” shocks were also experienced in Attock, Lower Dir and Upper Dir.

Pakistan lies at the juncture of three major tectonic plates — the Arabian, Euro-Asian and Indian plates — creating five seismic zones across the country. This unique geological positioning makes the region particularly vulnerable to frequent earthquakes.

Fortunately, no casualties or damages have been reported from Pakistan in today’s tremor.

The Hindu Kush region has witnessed a series of powerful quakes this month. Earlier, a devastating 6.0-magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan killed over 1,400 people and destroyed hundreds of homes, with tremors also felt in parts of KP and Punjab. Just days later, another quake of magnitude 5.9 shook the region, rattling residents in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and northern KP.

Seismologists warn that while deep earthquakes such as today’s are less likely to cause major destruction, Pakistan remains highly vulnerable to seismic disasters due to unplanned urbanisation, fragile infrastructure, and proximity to active fault lines.

Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and follow safety protocols in the event of aftershocks.
