Trump Calls Xi Jinping “Very Tough” as US-China Trade Tensions Flare

US President Donald Trump described Chinese President Xi Jinping as “very tough” and “extremely hard to make a deal with” in a recent social media post, reflecting rising tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

Trump’s remarks on his Truth Social platform came days after he accused China of violating a tariff rollback agreement reached in May. Under that deal, the US had reduced tariffs on Chinese goods from 145 percent to 30 percent, while China lowered its tariffs on American goods from 125 percent to 10 percent — a significant step toward easing the ongoing trade war.

However, China’s Ministry of Commerce claimed that the US had “severely violated” the agreement by imposing restrictions such as halting sales of computer chip design software to Chinese companies, banning Chinese-made chips in American tech firms like Huawei, and canceling visas for Chinese students. The ministry warned of measures to defend China’s interests.

The US also faces criticism for allegedly failing to remove non-tariff barriers as agreed. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer noted Beijing’s failure to lift such barriers.

Despite White House assurances that Trump would discuss these issues directly with Xi, the dispute has raised concerns about the stability of the tariff truce and its impact on global markets.

In parallel, a US trade court recently ruled that Trump exceeded his authority when imposing tariffs under emergency powers, though a federal appeals court temporarily reinstated them pending appeal.

The evolving trade tensions underscore the complexity and fragility of US-China relations under both leaders.
