UAE Explores Role in Post-War Gaza Governance with Israel and US

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has held behind-the-scenes discussions with Israel and the United States about a possible role in the temporary administration of Gaza, sources familiar with the talks revealed. According to reports from Reuters, the UAE is proposing to oversee Gaza’s governance, security, and reconstruction after Israel’s military withdraws, until a reformed Palestinian Authority (PA) can take control of the region.

The UAE, a close security partner of the U.S. and one of the few Arab nations with diplomatic ties to Israel, could leverage its position to help shape post-war Gaza. While no formal plan has been drafted or agreed upon, UAE officials are insisting that any solution must involve significant reforms to the Palestinian Authority and a roadmap toward an independent Palestinian state.

The UAE has made it clear that it would not engage in any plan that does not include substantial changes to the PA, citing its importance for lasting peace and stability in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem. However, Israel, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has publicly expressed its opposition to the PA governing Gaza, citing longstanding issues with the PA’s policies and educational curriculum.

The UAE’s discussions with Western diplomats also included proposals to employ private military contractors for peacekeeping roles in Gaza, a move that would likely raise concerns among international human rights groups. The UAE has been vocal about its opposition to Hamas, the Islamist group that controls Gaza, and has called for reforms within the PA to improve governance and counter corruption.

Reconstruction efforts for Gaza will be massive and costly, expected to take years and require international assistance. While the UAE and Israel share a mutual stance against Hamas, both countries are seeking stability and economic development in the region. However, Hamas, which was excluded from the discussions, has firmly rejected foreign intervention, stating that Gaza must remain distinctly Palestinian.

The U.S., through diplomatic channels, has continued to push for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, with hopes of facilitating peace and eventual rebuilding. The UAE’s proposal adds another layer to the complex diplomacy in Gaza's future and the broader Middle Eastern political landscape.
