UN Security Council May Convene to Address Rising Pakistan-India Tensions

The President of the United Nations Security Council has said that a meeting of the council may be convened to help ease the growing tension between Pakistan and India, following the deadly Pahalgam incident in occupied Kashmir.

The statement comes amid rising diplomatic and military friction between the two nuclear-armed neighbors after a false flag operation in India’s Pahalgam region resulted in the death of 26 tourists. India, without presenting evidence, blamed Pakistan for the attack — a claim Islamabad has strongly rejected.

"A Security Council meeting can be called to help reduce tensions between the two countries," the UNSC President stated, signaling possible international involvement in de-escalating the crisis.

Pakistan has taken serious diplomatic measures in response to India’s accusations, including announcing a formal notice against India over the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty — a bilateral water-sharing agreement that has withstood decades of hostility.

Earlier, Pakistan had formally offered to form a UN-led commission to investigate the Pahalgam incident impartially. Islamabad also condemned the attack and expressed readiness to cooperate fully in any neutral investigation.

In parallel, the United States has called for responsible dialogue between Pakistan and India, urging both sides to adopt measures that prevent further escalation and maintain regional stability.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in meetings with international leaders including the Saudi ambassador, has continued to demand an impartial international probe and has emphasized that India’s baseless allegations are an attempt to undermine Pakistan’s diplomatic and economic gains.

The UN's possible intervention — through a Security Council session — could mark a pivotal moment in managing what has quickly become one of the most volatile episodes in recent Pakistan-India relations.
