Wazirabad Court Adds 4-Year Sentence to Imran Khan Attack Convict

A court in Wazirabad has handed Muhammad Naveed, the convict behind the 2022 attack on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan, an additional four-year jail term for illegal possession of firearms. Naveed is already serving two life sentences for his role in the high-profile attack.

Judicial Magistrate Fazl Elahi found Naveed guilty under the Punjab Arms (Amended) Ordinance 2015 after reviewing evidence in Case/FIR No. 742/2022. Alongside the four-year term, the court imposed a fine of Rs40,000, with the sentence to run concurrently with his existing sentences.

The order, issued on February 2, instructs the Superintendent of Central Jail Gujranwala to take Naveed into custody to implement the new sentence.

The case stems from the November 3, 2022, attack during PTI's long march in Wazirabad, where Naveed opened fire on the rally, injuring Imran Khan in the shin. Several others, including Senator Faisal Javed, were injured, and one PTI worker was killed. Naveed was apprehended at the scene, and a formal FIR was registered on November 7, 2022. A joint investigation team was established under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) of 1997.

In April 2025, Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Muhammad Naeem Saleem had sentenced Naveed to two life terms under Pakistan Penal Code Section 302(b) for premeditated murder and ATA Section 7(a) for acts of terrorism. Two co-accused, Tayyab Jahangir Butt and Waqas, were acquitted due to insufficient evidence.

The additional sentence reinforces the ongoing legal proceedings against Naveed and underscores the judiciary's commitment to holding perpetrators of politically-motivated violence accountable.
