White House Clarifies Elon Musk’s Role, Denies Decision-Making Authority

The White House has clarified billionaire Elon Musk's position in the Trump administration, stating that he holds the role of a senior adviser to the president but does not have any formal decision-making authority. This clarification came in a court filing on Monday, responding to a case brought against Musk by the State of New Mexico.

The filing, signed by Joshua Fisher, the director of the Office of Administration at the White House, emphasized that Musk's involvement is limited to advising President Trump and communicating the president's directives. "Like other senior White House advisors, Mr. Musk has no actual or formal authority to make government decisions himself," the filing said.

The clarification also addressed Musk's alleged connection to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has been central to the Trump administration's focus on reducing wasteful government spending. According to Fisher’s filing, Musk is not an employee of the U.S. DOGE Service or its temporary organization. Additionally, it was stated that Musk does not hold the position of the U.S. DOGE Service Administrator.

The DOGE initiative, which has been a major part of the Trump administration's second term, aims to overhaul government operations and reduce inefficiency, including significant job cuts across federal agencies. Musk, known for his role as the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, was tasked with spearheading efforts to root out wasteful spending within the government.

However, the White House's filing seeks to clarify that while Musk has been involved in this reform effort, his role is purely advisory and does not carry any direct influence over government decisions or policy.

The filing comes amid legal scrutiny over Musk's role in the administration, with critics questioning his influence in government operations.
