A woman accused of disseminating false information regarding a college campus rape case was arrested in Lahore on Thursday. Sara Khan, initially taken into custody in Karachi on October 22, was transferred to Lahore after a case was registered against her under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) and multiple sections of the Pakistan Penal Code.
The case was filed after Khan claimed on social media that she was the mother of a student who had allegedly been assaulted, prompting widespread protests and unrest. The protests, which erupted on October 14, led to vandalism at the college and clashes with police, injuring at least 27 students.
The police have since stated that the allegations were false. A video released by ASP Bano Naqvi, featuring the alleged father and uncle of the supposed victim, clarified that the girl had been hospitalized after a fall at home, not as a result of an assault.
In light of the situation, the Punjab Home Department has formed a joint investigation team (JIT) to look into the spread of unverified news on social media. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz condemned the misinformation, stating that a conspiracy could have endangered lives and called for a crackdown on fake news operations.
