Authorities in Hong Kong are carrying out a mass evacuation after the discovery of a massive World War II-era bomb in the city’s Quarry Bay area.

Police confirmed the unexploded ordnance, measuring around 1.5 metres in length and weighing 450 kilogrammes (1,000 pounds), was unearthed on Friday. Officials warned that the bomb remained “fully functional” and posed significant risks, making dismantling and disposal a highly dangerous operation.

“Due to the extremely high risks involved in dismantling and disposing of the bomb, we must activate the emergency evacuation plan,” Hong Kong Police District Commander Andy Chan said.

As part of the safety measures, about 6,000 residents from 18 residential buildings in the area will be evacuated Friday night. Disposal operations are scheduled to begin early Saturday morning.

Hong Kong was a key battleground during Japan’s expansion across Asia in World War II, experiencing fierce combat between Japanese and Allied forces. Decades later, construction workers and hikers continue to stumble upon unexploded bombs left behind from the era.

This is not the first time such a discovery has disrupted city life. In May 2018, authorities evacuated 1,200 residents in the Wan Chai district after finding a similar type of bomb. The disposal process at that time took nearly 20 hours to safely complete.

Police noted that the current ordnance closely resembles the one unearthed in 2018, underscoring the continued presence of wartime remnants beneath Hong Kong’s modern skyline.
