Young Doctors Association Splits Over Protest After Violence at Jinnah Hospital

The Young Doctors Association (YDA) has fractured into two factions following protests against a recent act of violence at Karachi’s Jinnah Hospital. The incident, which involved an attack on doctors by attendants of a deceased patient, has triggered widespread outrage within the medical community.

According to official sources, an internal inquiry into the incident revealed that the individuals involved in the assault were Bachelor of Nursing students at Jinnah Hospital. The report has been submitted to the hospital’s Director, recommending that the accused students be expelled from the institution.

In light of the inquiry, one group of the YDA has decided to end its protest, citing the steps taken as adequate. However, another faction of the YDA, under the leadership of Chairman Dr. Farrukh, has refused to back down. This group has announced the continuation of their protest, including a boycott of Out-Patient Departments (OPDs), and plans to stage a march today to demand protection and respect for healthcare professionals.

Dr. Farrukh stated that the march would highlight the ongoing risks faced by doctors and call for concrete action to ensure their safety. “The dignity and safety of doctors must be restored. Our lives are at risk every day,” he said.

The inquiry report has also recommended that the First Information Report (FIR) filed against the doctors during the incident be moved to “C Class,” effectively clearing them of any wrongdoing. Additionally, the report suggests that the deputy in-charge responsible for security negligence be dismissed from his post.

The incident took place two days ago when a patient passed away at Jinnah Hospital, prompting a violent reaction from attendants. A doctor was reportedly assaulted, leading to an immediate protest by fellow medical staff.

The division within YDA has sparked debate in medical circles, with some supporting continued resistance and others preferring dialogue after the inquiry's findings. The situation remains tense as both sides maintain their respective positions.
