POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will meet at the Presidential Palace this evening to deliberate on the issue of government formation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), amid growing internal divisions within the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) over the choice of the next AJK Prime Minister.
According to sources, Prime Minister Shehbaz will be accompanied by senior PML-N ministers, while PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will also attend the meeting alongside a high-level party delegation.
The PPP delegation will include Raja Pervez Ashraf, Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, and Sherry Rehman, whereas the government team will comprise Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Rana Sanaullah, and Amir Muqam.
Sources said the meeting will discuss the political situation in the country and the formation of a new government in Azad Kashmir. Bilawal Bhutto is expected to inform the Prime Minister of PPP’s preferred nominee for the AJK premiership and extend an invitation to PML-N to join the cabinet.
⚖️ PPP Faces Internal Divisions Over PM Candidate
Reports suggest that serious differences have surfaced within PPP ranks regarding the nomination of Chaudhry Yasin for the post of AJK Prime Minister.
According to sources, a strong faction within the party is opposing Yasin’s nomination, while MLAs elected on reserved seats for refugees are reportedly supporting Chaudhry Latif Akbar.
Party insiders say the leadership has postponed the formal announcement of its candidate due to fears that pushing Yasin’s name could deepen divisions within the party.
Concerns have also been raised that both the President of AJK, Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry, and Yasin belong to the Mirpur division, a move viewed by some as politically imbalanced. PPP has previously had two prime ministers from the same division.
Amid the growing rift, Bilawal Bhutto has summoned another meeting of the PPP’s Azad Kashmir parliamentary party to address internal grievances and seek consensus before finalizing the candidate.
Sources suggest that if party reservations persist, the leadership may reconsider its choice for the top post.
🏛️ Parallel Meeting at PM House
In a separate development, an important meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chairman Bilawal Bhutto is also scheduled to take place at the Prime Minister House today.
Both leaders will be accompanied by their respective teams, including Ishaq Dar, Rana Sanaullah, Amir Muqam, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Sherry Rehman, and Nayyar Bukhari.
The meeting will focus on finalizing PPP’s strategy in Azad Kashmir, where the party has already submitted a no-confidence motion against the incumbent AJK Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq, who has refused to resign.
According to available figures, the PPP currently enjoys the support of 36 members in the AJK Legislative Assembly — comfortably exceeding the 27 votes required to form the next government.
