11 Arrested in Shocking ‘Honour’ Killing of Couple in Quetta’s Dagari

In a deeply disturbing case that has shocked the nation, a couple was brutally executed in Balochistan’s Dagari area on alleged tribal orders, with a video of the murders going viral on social media. Authorities have since arrested 11 suspects, including a tribal leader, and a probe is underway under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The Crime

According to a first information report (FIR) registered at the Hanna-Urak Police Station, Bano Bibi and Ihsanullah were shot dead in cold blood in the Sanjidi area, allegedly after being declared "guilty" of an “immoral relationship” by a tribal leader.

The execution video shows armed men leading the couple into a desert and shooting them at point-blank range, with additional shots fired at their lifeless bodies. The video was allegedly filmed and circulated online to incite fear.

Law Enforcement Response

Superintendent of Police (SP) SCIW Syed Saboor Agha confirmed that 11 suspects had been arrested, including tribal elder Sardar Sherbaz Satakzai, who allegedly ordered the killings. Satakzai has been remanded in police custody for two days by an anti-terrorism court.

The case has now been handed over to the Serious Crime Investigation Wing (SCIW) for further inquiry.

Judicial & Political Response

The Chief Justice of Balochistan High Court, Rozi Khan Barrech, has taken suo motu notice and summoned the chief secretary and IG Balochistan to appear before the court on July 22.

PPP MNA Shazia Marri submitted an adjournment motion in the National Assembly, calling the incident a “national and human emergency.” She urged that the state become the complainant to ensure transparent and uncompromised prosecution.

Condemnation from Across Society

The murders were widely condemned by political leaders, activists, and the public:

  • PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari called the killers “beasts” and demanded that this be a test case for the government.
  • Defence Minister Khawaja Asif shared the video and urged Baloch citizens to rise against internal injustices.
  • Senator Sherry Rehman declared the killings “unforgivable,” condemning tribal justice and calling for legislative reform.
  • Activist Sammi Deen Baloch called it a “heinous crime and humiliation of humanity,” appealing to tribal elders to respect women’s autonomy.

The Broader Context

‘Honour’ killings remain a grim reality in Pakistan, with the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan reporting 346 such killings in 2024 alone, predominantly in Sindh and Punjab. This case adds to a disturbing trend of extrajudicial executions based on outdated tribal customs.

The Call for Justice

As public pressure mounts, civil society is demanding immediate, transparent prosecution of all involved. The case is being seen as a litmus test for Balochistan’s justice system and a pivotal moment to address honour-based violence in the country.
