The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) of Gujranwala has sentenced Naveed Ahmed, the primary accused in the attack on PTI founder Imran Khan’s rally in Wazirabad, to two life sentences. The attack, which occurred on November 3, 2022, during a PTI long march, resulted in the death of one person and left 13 others injured, including Imran Khan himself.
The court delivered its verdict after hearing the case related to the shooting incident. Naveed was convicted of terrorism and the killing of Moazzam, one of the victims of the attack. As a result, he was sentenced to one life term for the murder and another life term for terrorism charges.
In addition to the life sentences, Naveed received a prison term of three to five years for injuring four people during the attack. He was also fined Rs. 500,000. However, two other accused individuals, Tayyab Butt and Waqas, were acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
The court also made a significant ruling regarding the PTI founder’s role in the case. Imran Khan, who was summoned eight times to testify, failed to appear in court. Despite being ordered to give his statement via video link from Adiala Jail, Khan did not comply. This led the court to terminate his right to defend himself as a witness in the case.
The attack in Wazirabad had a profound impact, as it occurred during PTI’s long march, sparking political turmoil and accusations from Imran Khan. The PTI leader had publicly blamed senior figures of the PML-N, including Rana Sanaullah and Shehbaz Sharif, for allegedly orchestrating the attack.
