At least 12 people were injured on Saturday when a gas cylinder exploded at a roadside cafe near Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH), a Rescue 1122 official confirmed.
Speaking to Dawn.com, Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Ahmed Faizi said the explosion prompted an immediate response from rescue officials, who swiftly launched a rescue operation upon receiving the information.
"The injured were moved to the hospital by rescue officials themselves," Faizi stated, adding that Rescue 1122 firefighters quickly controlled the fire.
The injured are currently undergoing treatment at KTH, with hospital sources confirming that medical care is ongoing.
Recurring LPG Cylinder Incidents Across Pakistan
Gas cylinder explosions caused by leaks or adulterated LPG remain a persistent hazard across the country.
Just last month, an LPG tanker explosion in Multan claimed at least 19 lives and injured over a dozen others. The Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat later ordered an inquiry into the sale of adulterated LPG.
Earlier this week, gas explosions in Balochistan’s Quetta and Pishin districts resulted in one fatality and injuries to seven others.
In January, a gas cylinder explosion injured three people, including two young girls, in Dera Ismail Khan. Similar incidents in Ghotki and Rawalpindi resulted in casualties and multiple hospitalizations.
A particularly devastating incident in May last year claimed 27 lives, including 19 children, at an LPG filling shop in Hyderabad, prompting action against such businesses in Sindh.
Call for Safety Measures
Frequent gas-related accidents highlight the urgent need for better safety protocols and strict regulation of LPG sales across Pakistan. Authorities continue to urge the public to adhere to safety measures when handling gas cylinders.
