LEGAL
A long-awaited Jirga was held in Jagan/Kot Altaf to address the murder of Babu Brohi, a young man killed seven and a half years ago in the Had Sadar area near the New Faujdari police station. Prominent figures, including Provincial Advisor Babul Bhiyo, Ghaus Bakhsh Mehr, MP Arif Mehr, Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Jatoi, and others, participated in the tribal assembly.
Accusations and Defense
During the Jirga, the Brohi family accused former provincial minister Maqbool Ahmed Sheikh and his son, Municipal Committee Chairman Fayyaz Mahmood Sheikh, of involvement in Babu Brohi’s murder.
In a plea before the elders, Fayyaz Mahmood Sheikh denied the accusations, requesting absolution for himself and his father. However, the Brohi family did not accept his defense.
Fatwa Issued by Jirga
In a surprising verdict, the Jirga ruled that Maqbool Sheikh, Imtiaz Sheikh, and other accused individuals would be socially and economically ostracized. They were barred from owning property or serving as guards in the community.
Case Background
Babu Brohi was shot dead by armed men in Shikarpur over seven years ago. A murder case was filed against more than 16 individuals, including Fayyaz Mahmood Sheikh. Despite the long legal battle, the case remained unresolved in court.
Ongoing Legal Developments
Brohi’s family continues to pursue justice, with the main accused, Dadu Sheikh, currently in custody. The family has also lodged an FIR implicating key political figures, including PPP MPA Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh.
The Jirga’s decision has stirred debate over the tribal justice system’s influence in resolving long-standing criminal cases, raising questions about its implications for the judicial process.
