Accountability Court Sets January 7 for Indictment of Pervaiz Elahi in Corruption Case

The accountability court in Lahore has scheduled January 7 for the indictment of former Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi in a case related to alleged corruption in development projects.

The case, which also involves several co-accused, was heard by Judge Zubair Shahzad Kayani. During the proceedings, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi did not appear before the court.

Absence and Medical Grounds

When the court inquired about Elahi’s absence, his lawyer informed that the former chief minister had slipped in his bathroom the previous evening, resulting in injuries to his back and ankle. The defense submitted a medical report to substantiate the claim.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor contested the validity of the medical excuse, stating that such reports are routinely presented on hearing dates to delay proceedings.

Debate on Indictment of Co-Accused

The court deliberated on whether the co-accused could be indicted in Elahi’s absence. The NAB prosecutor argued for separate charges against the present accused, while the lawyer for co-accused Muhammad Khan Bhatti opposed the move, stating that the absence of the main accused precludes the indictment of others.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the court proceeded to indict Muhammad Khan Bhatti and other co-accused.

Next Hearing

The court adjourned the hearing and set January 7 as the date for the indictment of Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi. The judge emphasized the importance of proceeding without unnecessary delays.

Background of the Case

Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi is accused of misusing his position as chief minister to facilitate corruption in development projects. The allegations include irregularities in the allocation of contracts and misuse of funds.

The case is one of several high-profile investigations into alleged corruption by public officials, reflecting ongoing efforts to ensure accountability in Pakistan’s political and administrative spheres.
