Achakzai Seeks PM’s Intervention for Imran Khan’s Medical Examination

Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, has written a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, urging his “personal intervention” to ensure that former Prime Minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan receives a medical examination by his trusted doctors while detained at Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi.

The letter, shared on social media by Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP), emphasizes concerns over recent medical check-ups conducted without the knowledge or presence of Imran Khan’s personal medical team or family members. Achakzai stressed that a full examination by doctors familiar with the former premier’s medical history is “critically needed without any delay” in line with medical ethics, legal obligations, and fundamental human rights.

Achakzai specifically named Dr. Muhammad Aasim Yusuf, Dr. Prof. Mazhar Ishaq, and Dr. Prof. Aamir Awan as the trusted physicians who should conduct the examination. He requested that the prime minister ensure their access to safeguard Imran Khan’s health and well-being.

Separately, PTI’s Gohar Ali Khan informed the media that a meeting between Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi recently took place, with the latter stating that Imran was feeling “much better.” However, Gohar emphasized that family visits remain restricted, as Imran has not seen his family since December. He reiterated the need for full access for both family members and personal doctors.

Reports had emerged in the media about Imran Khan’s medical treatment, which the government confirmed last week. According to authorities, the former premier was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) in Islamabad on January 24 for a brief “20-minute” procedure on his eye. Pims executive director, Prof. Dr. Rana Imran Sikander, confirmed that the procedure was completed smoothly, and Imran remained stable throughout, receiving routine post-procedure care instructions.

PTI has strongly condemned the transfer to Pims, describing it as “secretive” and carried out without informing Imran Khan’s family or party leadership, while denying access to his personal physicians.

The latest developments have heightened concerns about the health and rights of the former premier, with opposition leaders calling for transparent medical oversight and immediate access to trusted healthcare providers.
