Action Halted Against Suspended Punjab Assembly Opposition Members

The Punjab Assembly has halted further punitive action against suspended opposition members, pending the outcome of ongoing negotiations between Speaker Malik Ahmed Khan and the opposition benches.

According to government sources, Speaker Khan has instructed both the Assembly Secretariat and treasury members to pause all disciplinary proceedings and financial penalties imposed on opposition lawmakers accused of vandalism and disorderly conduct during earlier sessions.

Notably, the process of collecting fines from 10 suspended opposition members — previously charged over violent disruptions — has been suspended, along with the deduction of those fines from their official salaries.

Earlier, the Speaker had imposed a collective fine exceeding Rs 2 million on the opposition members for their alleged misconduct during a contentious session of the Assembly.

In addition, sources confirmed that planned no-confidence motions to remove nine more opposition chairpersons from their committee positions have also been shelved. However, it was noted that four opposition chairpersons have already been removed from their posts in prior actions.

The decision to pause further disciplinary steps comes amid an effort to reduce tensions and restore working relations between the government and opposition within the provincial legislature.

The Speaker’s initiative for dialogue is seen as a move to foster a more cooperative political climate in the Assembly, which has been marred in recent weeks by protests, walkouts, and confrontations.

With talks ongoing, political observers say the coming days will determine whether the current ceasefire leads to a longer-term consensus or merely delays further legislative conflict.
