POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Leaders of the Awami National Party (ANP) have called on the government to expedite the release of the joint investigation team (JIT) report regarding the tragic explosions at the Swabi police station on September 28.
The demand was made during a meeting on Friday, where ANP leaders voiced their concerns over the delay in the report’s release and sought clarity on the incident that claimed two lives and injured several others.
Call for Transparency
Former adviser to the chief minister and ANP leader Mukhtar Khan emphasized the urgency of finalizing the JIT’s findings, stating that the public deserves to know the cause of the explosions.
“It is the right of the residents to understand why such a large amount of explosives was stored at the police station for so long,” Mukhtar Khan asserted, claiming that the blasts were an act of terrorism.
District president of ANP, Asifur Rehman, echoed these sentiments, urging the authorities to avoid unnecessary delays in sharing the report.
“If the investigation is complete, the findings must be made public immediately without resorting to excuses,” he said, expressing hope for transparency.
JIT Progress
According to SP (Investigation) Iftikhar Ali Khan, the JIT, led by senior police officer Rab Nawaz Khan, has not yet finalized its report but is expected to conclude its work soon.
The blasts, involving around 1,200 kilograms of explosive material stored in the police station’s godown, raised serious questions about the safety protocols and handling of hazardous materials in public facilities.
Commuters Complain of Overcharging by Rickshaw Drivers
In a separate issue, commuters in Swabi have expressed frustration over persistent overcharging by auto-rickshaw drivers, citing negligence by the district traffic police and local administration.
Arshad Khan, a resident of Swabi city, highlighted the plight of women passengers who, out of fear, avoid challenging excessive fares.
Another resident, Asif Khan, pointed out that the fare for the Swabi-to-Gohati route, officially set at Rs30, is being inflated to Rs50 by rickshaw drivers.
“Whenever fuel prices rise, fares are immediately hiked, but when fuel costs drop, the benefit never reaches commuters,” Asif Khan said.
Traffic police have urged commuters to report such incidents to facilitate swift action against overcharging.
Conclusion
While the demand for the timely release of the Swabi blasts’ JIT report gains momentum, residents also call for stricter regulation of local transport fares. Both issues highlight the need for greater accountability and responsive governance to address public grievances effectively.
