A deadly armed assault on a local jirga in Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa claimed the life of one person and left three others, including a police constable, seriously injured, police confirmed on Saturday.
According to Bannu police spokesperson Kashif Nawaz, the Sardi Khel community had convened a jirga in the Mandi Khel area when it came under attack by armed militants. The assailants reportedly tried to abduct the jirga leader, Malak Eid Nawaz Sardi Khel, which led to a confrontation with the participants.
“The armed men opened fire during the clash, resulting in one fatality and three injuries,” Nawaz said.
The injured were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital Bannu. A police contingent immediately responded to the scene and has launched a search operation to apprehend the attackers and restore peace in the area.
Bannu – A Recurring Flashpoint
The incident adds to a troubling trend of rising militancy in the Bannu region, which has witnessed several high-profile terror attacks in recent months.
- In March 2025, a terrorist assault on Bannu Cantonment resulted in 16 terrorists killed, five soldiers martyred, and significant civilian casualties due to suicide bombings that destroyed a mosque and residential buildings.
- On October 14, 2024, five militants in burqas and suicide vests launched a brazen attack on Iqbal Shaheed Police Lines, killing four police officials.
- In July 2023, another terrorist strike on Bannu Cantonment martyred eight security personnel, while ten militants were neutralized in the counter-operation.
Despite these high-intensity events, Pakistan recorded a decline in overall militant activity in June 2025. A report by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) noted 78 attacks nationwide, causing 100 deaths, including 53 security personnel, 39 civilians, and six militants.
Persistent Threats in KP and Balochistan
The banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has intensified its operations in KP and Balochistan, especially after unilaterally ending a ceasefire with the government in November 2022.
Security forces continue to remain on high alert in Bannu and other vulnerable regions, where peace committees and police face relentless militant threats. Today's attack is yet another grim reminder of the fragile security situation in Pakistan’s northwest.
