Bangladesh Demands India Extradite Former PM Sheikh Hasina After Death Sentence

Bangladesh has formally demanded the immediate extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid from India after the International Crimes Tribunal convicted her of crimes against humanity. The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Mohammad Ghulam Murtaza, delivered its verdict on Monday, sentencing Hasina to life imprisonment on one charge and to death on three others for inciting violence and ordering murders. Former Bangladeshi Home Minister Asaduzzaman Kamal was also sentenced to death.

Both Hasina and Kamal had fled to India earlier this year, seeking asylum amid violent protests in Bangladesh. Following the tribunal’s ruling, the Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry issued a statement urging India to hand over the convicted leaders immediately, citing a bilateral agreement obliging extradition in such cases.

The statement further warned that granting asylum to individuals found guilty of crimes against humanity would be considered a “highly unfriendly act” and a serious travesty of justice. The Bangladeshi government emphasized its commitment to ensuring accountability for actions deemed criminal under the tribunal’s verdict.

Sheikh Hasina’s flight to India in August 2024 came after a series of violent demonstrations in Bangladesh, during which tensions escalated over her alleged role in inciting unrest. The International Crimes Tribunal has now formally held her accountable for those actions, marking a significant development in Bangladesh’s ongoing efforts to prosecute high-profile political figures for crimes against humanity.

The tribunal’s ruling and Bangladesh’s subsequent demand for extradition are likely to test diplomatic relations between Dhaka and New Delhi, as the two countries navigate complex legal and political considerations surrounding the asylum of convicted leaders.
