Ukraine Strikes Russian Oil Refinery Near Moscow Amid Escalating Attacks

The Ukrainian army reported striking a Russian oil refinery near Moscow on Saturday, a day after Russia launched deadly attacks on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv.

The strike targeted a refinery in the Ryazan region, according to the Ukrainian army’s social media announcement, as part of “efforts to reduce the enemy’s ability to launch missile and bomb strikes.”

On Friday, Russian attacks on Kyiv killed at least six people and wounded nearly three dozen others, targeting residential buildings and other infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the assault as a “wicked attack,” noting that Russian forces used around 430 drones and 18 missiles, including ballistic and aeroballistic missiles.

The Ryazan refinery strike comes amid a continued focus on energy infrastructure in the nearly four-year conflict, with both sides seeking strategic advantage ahead of a punishing winter. Last week, Ukraine’s state-run electricity operator Ukrenergo announced power cuts across most regions to repair infrastructure damaged by Russian strikes.

Meanwhile, Ryazan Governor Pavel Malkov said Russian air defenses shot down 25 Ukrainian drones overnight, with falling debris causing a fire at one enterprise. No casualties were reported.

The situation at the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant remained stable after an external power line was automatically switched off, the plant confirmed.

In southern Ukraine, fighting intensified in the Zaporizhzhia region, where Ukrainian forces were forced to withdraw from five villages after clashes with Russian troops. Zelenskyy visited the front line in Zaporizhzhia earlier this week, meeting with troops and commanders, and stated, “The Russians want to do everything to make life unbearable for Ukraine. We are doing everything to ensure protection for our state and all Ukrainians.”

The escalation highlights the ongoing struggle for strategic control of energy and military infrastructure as winter approaches and both sides prepare for continued conflict.
