Bangladesh Ex-Captain Shakib Al Hasan Announces Retirement Plans Amid Legal Troubles

Former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan has announced his decision to retire from international cricket by March 2024, citing the upcoming Champions Trophy as his final international appearance. The 37-year-old veteran, who has had a significant impact on Bangladesh cricket, made the announcement amidst legal troubles at home, where he faces prosecution alongside members of ex-premier Sheikh Hasina’s party for alleged involvement in a police crackdown that resulted in multiple deaths.

Shakib, who has not returned to Bangladesh since the political upheaval last month, is eager to play in a two-match Test series against South Africa before hanging up his boots. However, the series remains uncertain due to concerns over the safety of playing in Bangladesh after the student-led revolution that toppled Sheikh Hasina’s government.

Final Matches in Sight

Shakib has already retired from T20 cricket following this year’s World Cup and aims to play his last 50-over matches at the 2024 Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Reflecting on his career, Shakib said, "This is the right time for me to move on, and BCB will now focus on developing new players."

With 70 Tests, 247 ODIs, and 129 T20 matches to his name, Shakib has been a cornerstone of Bangladesh's cricket success, holding the unique distinction of topping the ICC all-rounder rankings in all three formats simultaneously.

Legal Woes and Future Uncertainty

Shakib's legal troubles stem from accusations of murder related to his association with the previous government, adding complexity to his return to Bangladesh. Despite these issues, he remains hopeful of concluding his Test career at home, provided the situation stabilizes.
