Cape Town: South Africa took control of the first Test match against Pakistan on Day 1, thanks to a blistering bowling display from debutant Siyabonga Bosch and veteran Olivier Paterson.
Bosch's Dream Debut
Bosch, 30, playing in his home town, made an immediate impact, marking his debut with a wicket off his very first delivery. He removed Pakistan's captain Shan Masood, caught at third slip by Marco Jansen. Bosch’s fiery spell continued with two wickets in the opening session and two more after lunch, finishing with figures of 4-63 in 15 overs.
Paterson's Clinical Spell
Paterson also played a pivotal role, claiming 5-61 from 16 overs. His early breakthroughs included the dismissals of Imam-ul-Haq, who was caught by Jansen, and Babar Azam, who fell cheaply for four after edging a delivery outside the off-stump. Paterson followed up with key wickets after lunch, including Kamran Ghulam for 54, breaking a solid 81-run partnership.
Pakistan's Struggles
Pakistan started poorly, with Masood’s early departure setting the tone for a rough day. Saud Shakeel was dismissed for 14 after a controversial review, while Mohammad Rizwan (27) and Aamer Jamal (0) also failed to contribute significantly. After a brief resistance from Ghulam and Rizwan, South Africa's bowlers ripped through Pakistan’s middle and lower order, reducing them to 176 all out by the end of the day.
Late Resistance
Despite South Africa's dominance, Pakistan showed some defiance in the final stages, as Khurram Shahzad (9) and Mohammad Abbas (10) put up a 20-run stand for the 10th wicket. The second session was extended by 30 minutes, but Pakistan held out to close the day with the last wicket standing.
Looking Ahead
With South Africa in a strong position, Pakistan will need a remarkable performance from their bowlers to turn the tide. The visitors face a tough task ahead as they strive to recover from a difficult start.
