Five police personnel sustained minor injuries after terrorists launched a late-night assault on a police checkpost in the Shaikh Landak area of Bannu, within the Havaid police limits, officials confirmed on Friday.
According to a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Regional Police Officer (RPO) Kashif Nawaz, terrorists belonging to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) — referred to by the state as Fitna al Khawarij — targeted the police post late Thursday night.
Police personnel stationed at the checkpost retaliated with “courage and timely action,” successfully repelling the attack. “As a result of the effective and vigorous retaliatory fire by the police, the terrorists suffered heavy casualties,” the statement said. It added that the intense exchange of fire lasted nearly three hours, with reports indicating that several attackers were killed or injured.
Local armed tribesmen and members of the peace committee also rushed to support the police during the gunfight, strengthening the defensive response against the militants.
Five police officials sustained minor injuries during the operation and were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Following the attack, Bannu Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sajjad Khan ordered additional police personnel to reach the site. A heavy contingent later cordoned off the entire area to prevent the militants’ escape.
Both DIG Sajjad Khan and District Police Officer (DPO) Yasir Afridi commended the bravery of the police force as well as the support shown by local residents. DPO Afridi also visited the injured personnel in the hospital.
“Bannu police have once again proven that it stands as a strong wall against the enemies of peace,” the statement quoted DPO Afridi as saying. “The war against terrorism will continue until the last terrorist is eliminated.”
The latest confrontation comes amid heightened tension in the region. Just a day earlier, at least seven people — including minors — were injured in a quadcopter attack carried out by terrorists on a playground during a football match.
Pakistan has witnessed an uptick in militant violence over recent months, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. The resurgence follows the TTP’s announcement in November 2022 that it was ending its ceasefire with the government and would resume attacks on security and law enforcement agencies.
In October, a report by the Islamabad-based Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) highlighted a sharp rise in militant activity and counter-terror operations across the country.
