At the Los Angeles premiere of his much-anticipated project, 'Heeramandi,' renowned filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali (SLB) offered insights into the evolution of the show, revealing that its inception as a film concept dates back 18 years.
Originally conceived as a cinematic venture starring iconic actresses Rekha, Kareena Kapoor, and Rani Mukerji, Bhansali shared that the project's expansive narrative posed challenges for its realization on the big screen.
"This was 18 years ago, so at one point it was Rekha ji, Kareena, and Rani Mukerji," Bhansali reminisced about the initial cast lineup during a conversation with Lilly Singh at the premiere. He further disclosed that the project underwent multiple transformations in terms of casting, including considerations for Pakistani actors Imran Abbas, Fawad Khan, and Mahira Khan, before ultimately settling on its current ensemble.
Set in the milieu of courtesans and nawabs in pre-independence Lahore, 'Heeramandi' represents a departure from Bhansali's previous works, delving into a rich tapestry of historical and cultural narratives.
Expressing satisfaction with the present cast, which includes luminaries such as Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, and Aditi Rao Hydari, Bhansali highlighted the rigorous development process behind the show. He shared that 'Heeramandi' has been in the making for nearly three years, with filming spanning over 300 days.
Looking ahead, Bhansali expressed enthusiasm for his upcoming film, 'Love and War,' featuring a stellar cast comprising Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, and Vicky Kaushal, signaling his continued dedication to storytelling and cinematic excellence.
