At least seven passengers were injured on Tuesday after a powerful explosion on a railway track caused four bogies of the Jaffar Express to derail in Sindh’s Shikarpur district, officials said.

Shikarpur Deputy Commissioner Shakeel Abro confirmed that the explosion occurred around 8:15 a.m., approximately one kilometer from the Sultan Kot railway station. “The blast caused the derailment of four bogies. Seven people were injured, four of whom were shifted to the Combined Military Hospital, while three others were taken to the Civil Hospital in Shikarpur,” he said.

The Jaffar Express was en route to Quetta via Jacobabad when the incident took place.

According to Sukkur Deputy Divisional Superintendent Syed Moalim, the blast hit the train while it was moving on the track. Railway officials later dispatched a crane to lift the derailed bogies and clear the line.

Sukkur Divisional Transport Officer Mohsin Ali Sial said passengers were safely moved to nearby stations to facilitate the restoration of railway operations.

Shikarpur SSP Shahzeb Chachar added that the remaining bogies of the train continued toward Jacobabad. He confirmed that the attack targeted a single-track section used by trains traveling between Quetta and Jacobabad. Law enforcement personnel in both districts have launched a search operation to locate the perpetrators.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah condemned the incident and directed police to submit a detailed report. He also instructed the Larkana commissioner to ensure prompt medical assistance for the injured passengers.

The attack comes amid a disturbing pattern of sabotage targeting Pakistan’s railway infrastructure. In August, six bogies of the Jaffar Express derailed in Balochistan’s Mastung district after a similar blast on the track — though no casualties were reported at the time. Just days earlier, another explosion near Sibi narrowly missed the same train moments after it passed.

With a rise in militant attacks in recent years, authorities have expressed growing concern over the security of transport routes, particularly in Balochistan and Sindh, where such incidents have become increasingly frequent.
