British Pakistani Man Suffers Brain Cyst After Alleged Police Assault at Manchester Airport

A British Pakistani man, identified as Fahir, has been found to have a cyst on his brain after allegedly being assaulted by a police officer at Manchester Airport. The incident, which was captured on video and widely shared on social media, shows a police officer kicking and stamping on Fahir's head while he was on the ground.

The family’s lawyer, Akhmed Yakoob, made this statement outside Rochdale Police Station, emphasizing the trauma the family has endured. Fahir’s brother, Amaad, and their elderly mother were also allegedly assaulted by at least one officer from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) during the incident on Tuesday night. Following a CT scan, Fahir’s condition deteriorated overnight.

Mr. Yakoob revealed that Fahir’s older brother, who is a GMP officer, now fears for his own safety at work. “He went in today and spoke to his supervisor, and the only reason he is not going to work is because he fears for his own safety,” Yakoob added.

Public Outrage and Officer Suspension

The incident has sparked public outrage, leading to the suspension of the officer involved. GMP confirmed that they were responding to reports of an assault at the airport when the footage was recorded. The video shows Fahir being kicked in the head and stamped on while on the ground.

Dal Babu, a former Metropolitan Police chief superintendent, criticized the force used by the officer as “not reasonable.” He stated that handcuffing Fahir would have been appropriate, describing the officer's actions as “totally disproportionate.”

Official Responses and Investigation

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham announced that he and his deputy have met with the home secretary and the regional director of the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). They agreed that the IOPC investigation will be conducted swiftly, involve community stakeholders, and remain fully independent. Mr. Burnham expressed hope that this would reassure the public that all steps are being taken and all relevant issues will be fully considered.

Community Reaction

In response to the incident, around 200 demonstrators gathered outside Rochdale Police Station on Wednesday night, chanting “GMP shame on you!” The protest concluded without any further incidents, according to police reports.

Mr. Yakoob stated that he was unaware of the events leading up to the incident but insisted that “nothing justifies the barbaric treatment from the police officers.” The family is now seeking justice and accountability for the alleged assault and subsequent health complications suffered by Fahir.
