Trump Backs Patriot Missiles for Ukraine After Putin Disappoints on Ceasefire

Former U.S. President Donald Trump voiced support for sending Patriot missile systems to Ukraine after a recent phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, amid escalating Russian attacks on Kyiv.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said he had a "very good call" with Zelenskiy, in which they discussed air defense, joint production, and increasing Ukraine’s ability to “defend the sky” against intensifying Russian air strikes.

“They’re going to need [Patriots] for defense… they’re being hit pretty hard,” Trump said, praising the weapon system as “pretty amazing.”

The conversation came a day after Trump’s disappointing call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he criticized sharply.

“Putin just wants to go all the way—keep killing people. It’s no good,” Trump stated. “I was very unhappy with that call.”

Kyiv Suffers Major Drone Attack

Just hours after Trump’s call with Putin, Russia launched the largest drone attack of the war on the Ukrainian capital. President Zelenskiy described the bombardment as “deliberately massive and cynical.”

U.S. Patriot Missiles in Focus

Ukraine has long sought additional Patriot missile systems from the U.S. to defend against frequent Russian missile and drone strikes. A recent pause in U.S. weapons shipments had alarmed Kyiv, prompting fears of weakened defenses.

Zelenskiy said he and Trump discussed joint weapons production, procurement, and air defense cooperation, adding:

“We need it, America needs it.”

According to sources briefed on the Trump-Zelenskiy call, the dialogue was optimistic and could potentially lead to the resumption of Patriot missile supplies.

Trump also said he spoke with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about Ukraine’s needs, but noted no decision had been made yet regarding missile delivery.

In his nightly address, Zelenskiy confirmed:

“We agreed to arrange a meeting between our teams to strengthen air defenses. We had a very detailed discussion on joint production.”

Shift in U.S.-Ukraine Relations

While Patriot batteries were previously supplied under the Biden administration, Trump has repeatedly criticized that aid, claiming Washington gave military assistance to Ukraine “without getting anything in return.” Since returning to office, he has promised to restructure U.S.-Ukraine relations and re-evaluate military support strategies.

With Kyiv under siege and diplomacy at a standstill, the next steps in U.S.-Ukraine military cooperation—particularly involving advanced air defense systems—could significantly alter the battlefield dynamics.
