Qatar has maintained limited communication with Iran despite escalating tensions in the Gulf region, the Qatari Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday. Spokesman Majid Al-Ansari confirmed that since the onset of the crisis, there has been only one direct contact between the two countries, involving a phone call between the Qatari Prime Minister and the Iranian Foreign Minister.
Speaking to the media, Al-Ansari stressed that communication channels between Qatar and Iran have not been severed and that Doha’s focus remains on reducing tensions through dialogue and negotiation.
“We believe that disputes can be resolved through negotiations,” he said, highlighting that Iranian President Masoud Peshkeshian’s apology earlier in the crisis offered a “ray of hope.” However, he added that subsequent actions by Qatar, including attacks on the UAE and Bahrain, complicated the situation and prevented Iran from responding further.
The Qatari official said that Doha is preparing a joint statement with other Gulf countries regarding the ongoing conflict but noted that Iran has yet to engage in discussions on the statement.
Al-Ansari emphasized that Qatar is not a party to the current war but is ready to defend itself fully if necessary. “Qatar believes in diplomacy, but will respond in the event of a future attack,” he said.
The statement reflects Qatar’s attempt to position itself as a diplomatic actor in the Middle East while maintaining readiness amid the volatile regional situation.
