Iran’s New Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei Injured but “Safe and Sound”

Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, Ayatullah Mojtaba Khamenei, has sustained injuries but is reportedly “safe and sound,” the son of President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Wednesday. This statement provides the first official explanation for the leader’s absence from public view since his appointment over the weekend.

According to Yousef Pezeshkian, who is also a government adviser, Mojtaba Khamenei “had been injured” but is currently in good condition. State television referred to him as a “wounded veteran of the Ramazan war”, without disclosing specifics.

Background

Mojtaba Khamenei, previously a low-profile but influential figure, became Iran’s top leader following the assassination of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during a daytime airstrike at the start of the US-Israel war on Iran on February 28. The attack also reportedly killed his mother and wife.

Unconfirmed reports from New York Times sources suggest that Khamenei suffered leg injuries and is currently sheltering in a highly secure location with limited communication. Analysts note that he has become an immediate target for assassination by US and Israeli forces, making public appearances highly risky.

Symbolism and Support

Despite his absence, Khamenei’s image has been prominently displayed across Tehran on giant billboards and at public rallies, symbolizing continuity and resilience. Analysts believe that in practice, day-to-day governance may be delegated to national security chief Ali Larijani, while parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf oversees the ongoing war effort.

The army and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have pledged allegiance to Khamenei. Support has also been expressed by Houthi rebels in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who promised unwavering backing.

Geopolitical Tensions

Mojtaba Khamenei’s rise has drawn warnings from US President Donald Trump, who described him as “unacceptable” and suggested that his position would be contingent on US approval. Analysts caution that Khamenei’s continued survival is strategically vital for Iran, serving as a symbol of system resilience after the violent targeting of his family.

Observers expect Khamenei to remain in protective seclusion for an extended period, with limited public engagement, while key allies manage Iran’s internal and military affairs amid ongoing international tensions.
