CERN Experts Visit Pakistan to Review Scientific Progress

ISLAMABAD: A high-level delegation from the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), one of the world’s most prestigious scientific institutions, visited Pakistan to evaluate its progress in the fields of science and technology.

The five-member expert team met with the Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) and toured several leading national research and technology institutions. According to a statement from the Foreign Office, the institutions included the National Centre for Physics, Heavy Mechanical Complex-3, Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology, Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Oncology, and the National Institute for Laser and Optronics, among others.

Pakistan and CERN: A Longstanding Partnership

CERN, founded in 1954 on the principle of “science for peace”, welcomed Pakistan as an associate member on July 31, 2015. The PAEC has since served as the lead agency for Pak-CERN collaboration.

The partnership has provided Pakistan with significant benefits, including:

·       Advancing scientific knowledge and fostering local technological development.

·       Training the next generation of scientists and engineers in cutting-edge fields.

·       Industrial and engineering contracts, creating opportunities for Pakistani firms to contribute to CERN’s global projects.

·       Technology transfer and intellectual exchange, strengthening the country’s research infrastructure.

A CERN task force had also visited Pakistan in 2022 to review the associate membership, highlighting the growing scope of cooperation.

Strategic Importance

Officials noted that through this collaboration, Pakistan has not only contributed to frontier science but has also positioned itself as a reliable partner in the global scientific community. The cooperation has spurred industrial growth, human resource development, and innovations in nuclear, medical, and engineering technologies.

“Through its associate membership, Pakistan has gained significant benefits — advancing the frontiers of scientific knowledge, fostering technological development, and training a new generation of scientists and engineers,” the FO statement said.

The visit of the CERN delegation underscores Pakistan’s role as a committed scientific partner, reinforcing its place in international research and technological advancement.
