In a strongly worded statement at the United Nations Security Council Briefing on the Situation in the Middle East, Chinese ambassador Dai Bing squarely placed the blame for the recent escalation in the region on Israel's actions, particularly citing the attack on Iran's embassy in Syria as "extremely vicious."
Ambassador Bing emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the airstrikes on Iran's diplomatic premises in Syria on April 1, which resulted in casualties and extensive damage. He condemned this act as a severe violation of international law and the sovereignty of both Syria and Iran.
Calling for maximum calm and restraint from all parties involved, Bing urged for the resolution of differences in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter and international law to prevent further escalation.
Bing also attributed the current tensions to Iran's actions in Gaza, underscoring the centrality of the Palestinian question to the broader Middle East issue. He warned that allowing the conflict in Gaza to persist could lead to further instability and conflict in the region, with dire consequences for peace and security.
The remarks come in the wake of Iran's retaliatory strike against Israel, which saw the launch of explosive drones and missiles targeting Israeli territory. While Israel's military reported intercepting most of the missiles, the incident has heightened concerns of a wider regional conflict.
As tensions continue to simmer, the international community remains vigilant, with calls for de-escalation and diplomatic solutions to prevent further violence and instability in the already volatile Middle East.
