Clash in Ataq: STC Supporters Attack Government Building, 5 Dead

At least five people were killed and 39 wounded on Wednesday in Ataq, the capital of Yemen’s Shabwah governorate, after supporters of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) attempted to storm a local government building, local authorities said.

The security committee in Shabwah reported that armed protesters fired live ammunition at security and military personnel during the assault, prompting official forces to intervene. Rami Lamlas, deputy head of the Shabwah General Hospital Authority, confirmed the casualties to Al Jazeera.

Local sources said the STC-affiliated crowd had organized a march before heading to the government building, where they attempted to remove the national flag and seize control of the premises.

The attack comes shortly after the Saudi-backed Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) announced a new cabinet aimed at including diverse political and regional representation to stabilize the divided nation. Last month, the PLC solidified its control over southern Yemen following a failed STC bid to seize two southern provinces, which led to the withdrawal of UAE-backed STC forces.

The Shabwah security committee vowed to take strict action against anyone involved in planning, inciting, or participating in the violence and urged citizens not to heed calls for unrest.

Yemen continues to be plagued by political fragmentation, regional rivalries, and armed clashes, which exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn country.
