Coalition Airstrikes Kill 4 Civilians in Yemen’s Dhale Amid STC Turmoil

At least four civilians were killed and six wounded in coalition airstrikes in Yemen’s Dhale province on Wednesday, medical sources told AFP, as the military targeted the home region of Southern Transitional Council (STC) leader Aidaros Alzubidi following a political fallout.

More than 15 airstrikes struck the province, the home governorate of Alzubidi, who was recently removed from the presidency of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) after the STC temporarily seized swathes of southern territory before coalition forces rolled back their advance.

According to coalition statements, Alzubidi was given a 48-hour ultimatum to travel to Riyadh for discussions, but he failed to board the delegation’s flight. In response, the coalition launched airstrikes accusing him of mobilizing “large forces” in Dhale.

The PLC officially dismissed Alzubidi, accusing him of high treason and engaging in armed insurgency. The council claimed he had exploited the southern cause to commit “grave crimes against civilians.”

An STC official told AFP that Alzubidi chose not to join the Riyadh delegation after learning he would be asked to dissolve his faction, which is part of the PLC. Later, the STC said it had lost contact with its delegation in Riyadh and called on Saudi Arabia to ensure their safety.

Meanwhile, Aden, the STC’s stronghold and home to its headquarters, has seen forces loyal to Alzubidi’s deputy, Abdulrahman al-Mahrami, deployed across streets and government buildings to enforce security and prevent hostilities.

The crisis follows Alzubidi’s announcement of a two-year transition plan to establish a new state, “South Arabia,” in southern Yemen. The coalition’s strikes and political maneuvering come amid fears of further escalation in the south, where more than 100 people have reportedly been killed in clashes and airstrikes in recent weeks.
