DG ISPR: Court Martial of Former DG ISI Underway, Army’s Accountability Based on Facts, Not Politics

Pakistan Army spokesperson Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry on Friday confirmed that the trial and court martial of the former Director General (DG) Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) is underway.

Addressing a press conference at Peshawar Corps Headquarters, the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that the Pakistan Army’s process of self-accountability is based on facts and evidence, not allegations.

“The army has an official relationship with the state, not personal or political. If someone turns that relationship into a personal or political one, it is wrong,” he asserted. “The state makes decisions; we only give our professional input. We do not follow anyone’s politics.”

Lt Gen Chaudhry stated that the ongoing trial of the former ISI chief is being conducted through a Field General Court Martial (FGCM). He explained that every individual charged within the army is given a full opportunity to defend themselves and that the process is being carried out with due diligence.

“We have no problem with any delay,” he added. “When such a sensitive and high-profile case is being handled, every requirement of justice and procedure must be fulfilled.”

He further said one of the reasons for the court martial was the misuse of official relationships for personal or political interests. “When you turn a professional relationship into a political one, there will be accountability. Do not bring us into your politics. Your politics are your own — all political parties are respectable to us,” he maintained.

Regarding the events of May 9, the DG ISPR reiterated the army’s firm stance, declaring that the matter was not just about the Pakistan Army but “a case of the nation itself.”

“The events of May 9 were an attack on the state, not just on the army,” he emphasized. “Our position remains clear — those responsible will be held accountable under the law.”

Lt Gen Chaudhry’s remarks come amid ongoing military proceedings and growing national attention on accountability and institutional neutrality. He reaffirmed that the Pakistan Army will continue to uphold its principles of professionalism, discipline, and loyalty to the state above all political
