POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has strongly rejected recent allegations regarding a meeting between the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, calling the claims factually incorrect and politically motivated.
In an official statement, the ECP spokesperson said that some vested interests and groups have been running a misleading propaganda campaign to undermine the credibility of the Commission and its members.
“The Chief Election Commissioner and members do not come under any pressure or blackmail,” the spokesperson declared.
“Baseless allegations are regularly made by certain elements, but the ECP continues to function in accordance with the Constitution and the law.”
The spokesperson emphasized that meetings between the Election Commission and constitutional or administrative officeholders are routine and legitimate.
“Comments made about the meeting between the Punjab Assembly Speaker and the CEC are against the facts,” the statement read.
“The CEC has also previously held multiple meetings with former President Arif Alvi at the request of various PTI leaders.”
The ECP reiterated that all of its decisions are independent and impartial, taken without influence or pressure from any party or group.
“No group’s blackmail or propaganda will be allowed to undermine the constitutional role of the Election Commission,” the spokesperson added.
This response comes amid growing political friction, with some political actors accusing the ECP of favoritism and political maneuvering — claims the Commission has firmly denied.
The Election Commission reaffirmed its commitment to upholding democratic norms, electoral integrity, and constitutional boundaries, warning that such smear campaigns would not deter it from carrying out its mandate.
