CRIME

A violent clash broke out on Tuesday night between two groups at a call centre in Karachi’s Gulshan-i-Iqbal, leading to the arrest of eight suspects, police confirmed on Wednesday.
According to details, the incident stemmed from harassment allegations made by the daughter of the complainant, who worked at the call centre. She alleged that the branch manager had been harassing her for the past three years. Frustrated, she informed her brother, who, along with other relatives, confronted the manager.
On September 23, when the woman reported to work, her family alleged that she was kept hostage inside the office premises. The complainant, accompanied by his sister and nephews, went to the call centre at night but found the doors locked. When they forced entry, they were allegedly abused by the branch manager, who, along with others, reportedly opened fire.
The complainant’s nephew returned fire while the office guard also joined in the shooting. The exchange of gunfire created panic in the area, prompting police intervention after residents reported the incident through the helpline.
Law enforcement arrived swiftly, arresting five individuals directly involved in the firing and detaining three others accused of creating the situation. Weapons and ammunition were also recovered from the suspects.
A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered at the Gulshan-i-Iqbal Police Station under Sections 147, 148, 149, 337A, 337H(ii), 342, 354, and 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code, along with Section 25 of the Sindh Arms Act 2013. The charges include rioting, wrongful confinement, assault, harassment, criminal intimidation, and the unlawful use of firearms.
This incident comes months after another shocking case in Karachi’s DHA, where a man opened fire on police officers during an attempted arrest in a kidnapping for ransom case. That suspect was also linked to cybercrime and the attempted murder of a journalist.
The latest case underscores growing concerns over workplace harassment and the escalation of violence in Karachi, with police vowing to pursue the matter to ensure accountability.
