Election Commission Disqualifies MNA Jamshed Dasti Over Fake Academic Credentials

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has disqualified Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Jamshed Dasti after declaring his educational certificates to be fake, Geo News reported on Tuesday.

In a reserved verdict announced today, the ECP accepted the reference filed by the Speaker of the National Assembly and upheld two disqualification petitions filed against the embattled MNA.

The decision comes after months of legal proceedings and scrutiny. In May 2025, the Election Commission had concluded its hearing on petitions related to Dasti’s educational credentials and undeclared assets, and had reserved its decision.

Today’s ruling marks a significant development in the case, with the ECP clearly stating that Dasti's academic documents submitted to the Commission were forged.

The disqualification is based on Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution, which mandates that a parliamentarian must be truthful and honest. The use of fake documents is grounds for immediate disqualification, as reaffirmed by multiple Supreme Court judgments.

The reference, originally sent by the Speaker National Assembly, triggered the formal investigation into the legitimacy of Dasti’s documents and declarations.

Jamshed Dasti, a controversial political figure, has remained in the spotlight over the years for various legal and political confrontations. His disqualification may now lead to a by-election in his constituency, and could potentially set a precedent for similar scrutiny against other lawmakers.

The verdict is likely to be challenged in higher courts, but as of now, Dasti stands disqualified and will no longer hold a seat in the National Assembly.
