Elon Musk Deletes Controversial Post on Biden and Harris After Backlash

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has deleted a social media post that drew widespread criticism after he made controversial remarks about the lack of assassination attempts on President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The post was made on X (formerly Twitter) and was promptly met with a storm of backlash from across the political spectrum.

The controversy began when Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, commented on the recent apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. In a response to another user's question about why there were attempts on Trump’s life but none on Biden or Harris, Musk posted, “no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala” along with an emoji of a face with a raised eyebrow.

Musk later attempted to clarify his remarks, stating that the post had been meant as a joke. In a follow-up message, he said, “Well, one lesson I’ve learned is that just because I say something to a group and they laugh doesn’t mean it’s going to be all that hilarious as a post on X. Turns out that jokes are WAY less funny if people don’t know the context and the delivery is plain text.”

Despite Musk's explanation, his post was met with severe criticism. The hashtag “DeportElonMusk” trended on X, reflecting the depth of public disapproval. White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates condemned Musk’s comments, describing them as “irresponsible.” He emphasized the administration’s stance against political violence, stating, “There is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country,” and urging that “violence should only be condemned, never encouraged or joked about.”

Musk, who has recently become a prominent supporter of Trump, formally endorsed the former president for the 2024 election in July. Following the assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, Musk’s post and subsequent remarks have been scrutinized in the context of his political endorsements.

Earlier this month, Trump announced that if he were to regain the White House, he would appoint Musk to lead a “government efficiency commission,” further intertwining Musk’s public statements with political discourse.

The incident underscores the volatile nature of social media commentary and the impact that high-profile individuals can have on public discussions, especially when it involves sensitive topics such as political violence and security.
