Muslims in Europe Face Growing Racism and Discrimination, Reports EU Rights Agency
The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) released a report on Thursday highlighting a sharp rise in racism and discrimination against Muslims in Europe, noting a significant spike following the Hamas attack on Israel. The report, which surveyed over 9,600 Muslims across 13 EU countries, revealed that nearly half of all Muslims experience racism and discrimination in their daily lives, up from 39% in 2016.
The FRA report pointed to the job market as a key area of discrimination, where Muslims face significant hurdles. Women wearing religious attire and young Muslims born in the EU were particularly affected. With the Middle East conflict fueling anti-Muslim rhetoric, FRA Director Sirpa Rautio expressed concern about the "dehumanizing" narratives contributing to this rise in hate.
Several EU nations, including Austria, Germany, and Finland, recorded the highest rates of discrimination, with the report stressing the urgent need to address this growing issue.
