Farmers in Badin staged a massive protest on Saturday against the steep fall in rice prices, blocking the Karachi-Badin highway by holding a sit-in at Golarchi. The demonstration was organized by the Farmers Action Forum, which led a rally from Muhammadiya Masjid that culminated at Fazil Chowk, where protesters staged a prolonged sit-in.

The demonstrators expressed deep frustration over the sharp decline in rice prices, which have fallen from Rs 3,200 per maund to Rs 2,200, dealing a severe financial blow to the agricultural community.

Speaking at the protest, farmers accused the government of neglecting their plight and called for immediate intervention. They demanded the establishment of PASSCO procurement centers in the region to stabilize the market and ensure that farmers receive fair prices for their produce.

“The government must step in to end the economic exploitation of farmers,” said one of the protest leaders, warning that the continued fall in prices would destroy livelihoods across Sindh’s rice-growing districts.

Protesters warned that if their demands are not met, they will escalate their movement and call for a province-wide shutter-down strike on October 16.

Traffic remained suspended for several hours on the busy Karachi-Badin route as vehicles were diverted through alternate roads. Police officials monitored the situation closely to avoid any untoward incident.

Farmers say that despite repeated appeals, the authorities have failed to provide any support mechanism for small-scale growers struggling with rising input costs and declining commodity prices.
