Punjab police arrested five individuals on Saturday for their alleged involvement in the gang rape of a child in Muzaffargarh, intensifying concerns about the rising number of child abuse cases in the country.
According to a police spokesperson, the suspects lured the minor to a mango orchard where they molested him. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against the accused at Shah Jamal police station under Section 375-A (gang rape) and Section 377-B (sexual abuse of a minor) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
Muzaffargarh District Police Officer (DPO) Dr. Muhammad Rizwan Khan took immediate notice of the heinous crime and directed prompt legal action. The arrests were made following swift police operations after the victim’s complaint.
The incident adds to a troubling pattern of child abuse across the country. According to a report released by the NGO Sahil titled Six Months Cruel Numbers, a total of 1,630 cases of child abuse were reported in the first half of 2024 alone. These include:
- 862 cases of child sexual abuse
- 668 cases of abduction
- 82 cases of missing children
- 18 cases of child marriages
- 48 cases of post-abuse pornography
This alarming trend highlights a systemic issue of child protection, calling for urgent reforms and enhanced enforcement of child protection laws.
Just a day earlier, Punjab police claimed to have arrested three of four suspects involved in the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl in Faisalabad’s Chak 437 GB area. Last month, another incident in Lahore saw three suspects arrested for the gang rape of a woman.
Rights activists and child protection advocates have reiterated the need for stronger surveillance, fast-track courts for abuse cases, and proper rehabilitation for survivors.
Law enforcement officials have urged citizens to report any suspicious behavior or threats to children in their communities, assuring strict action against perpetrators under the law.
