Flood Forecasting Division Warns of Heavy Rains, High Flood Risk in Major Rivers

The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) has issued a warning of heavy rainfall in the upper reaches of Pakistan’s major rivers, raising the risk of high to very high floods in several key river systems over the coming days.

According to the FFD, rain is expected in the upper catchment areas from August 29, with particularly heavy downpours forecast from August 31 onward.

High Flood Risks Identified

·       Sutlej and Ravi Rivers: High to very high floods expected.

·       Ravi and Chenab Canals: Flooding risk over the next 24 hours.

·       Chenab River: Very high floods forecast at Head Trimon on August 29 evening; at Panjnad on September 2.

·       Indus River: High floods expected at Guddu and Sukkur barrages between September 4–5.

The division has urged authorities to remain on alert, warning that intense rainfall could trigger widespread flooding in vulnerable low-lying areas.

Preparedness Measures

Provincial disaster management authorities and irrigation departments have been advised to closely monitor river flows, strengthen embankments, and prepare emergency response plans to minimize damage.

Communities living along riverbanks and downstream areas are also advised to stay vigilant, follow official advisories, and take precautionary measures to ensure safety.

Background

Pakistan remains highly vulnerable to flooding during the monsoon season, with riverine floods frequently affecting agricultural lands, infrastructure, and human settlements. The forecast comes amid heightened concerns over the country’s capacity to handle extreme weather events, worsened by climate change.
