Citizens of Lahore are grappling with a fresh wave of inflation as the price of a 20kg bag of flour has surged to Rs1230 in the open market — an increase of Rs130 in just two weeks, according to the Grocery Merchants Association.
The sharp increase comes amid rising wheat prices, which flour mill owners say have crossed Rs2300 per maund. Just two weeks ago, the same quantity of wheat was being sold for a significantly lower rate.
A representative of the Flour Mills Association stated that the surge in wheat prices is the key factor behind the hike in flour rates, but expressed hope that prices would come down once the wheat market stabilizes.
Two weeks ago, a 20kg flour bag was available for Rs1100, making the current rate a significant burden for daily wage earners and low-income households already battling high utility and food prices.
Citizens have urged the government to intervene and regulate wheat supply to avoid further strain on essential food items.
