POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO) on Thursday denied media reports suggesting that Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir would soon undertake another visit to the United States.
The clarification came from FO spokesperson Tahir Andrabi during the ministry’s weekly press briefing, in response to a question regarding a Reuters report published a day earlier. The report had claimed that Field Marshal Munir was expected to travel to Washington in the coming weeks to meet US President Donald Trump, with discussions likely to focus on the Gaza situation, citing two sources, including one described as a key figure in the CDF’s economic diplomacy.
Rejecting the report, Andrabi said it presented the visit as if it were finalised and formally planned. “The Reuters story was showing as if the visit had been planned, and there was a finality about it. So, I am contradicting that and I’m contradicting the fact that a visit has been agreed or planned,” he stated.
The FO spokesperson added that he had no information regarding the timing or confirmation of any future visit by Field Marshal Munir to the United States. “The fact is that this is information that I do not have, about the timing or any future visit that might take place. We obviously will wait for an official announcement that the Government of Pakistan makes about such a visit,” Andrabi said.
He emphasized that official announcements are always issued in advance of foreign visits by Pakistan’s political and military leadership, and reiterated that no such announcement had been made regarding a US visit by the army chief.
Meanwhile, Field Marshal Asim Munir is currently on an official visit to Libya, where he reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening defence cooperation with Tripoli, according to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
Field Marshal Munir has already visited the United States three times this year. In June, he met President Donald Trump over a luncheon at the White House, marking the first instance of a US president hosting Pakistan’s army chief without senior civilian officials. In August, he paid another visit to the US, describing it as a “new dimension” in bilateral ties, and held high-level engagements with senior American political and military leadership, as well as members of the Pakistani diaspora.
In September, Field Marshal Munir again visited Washington, this time accompanied by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. During that visit, they met President Trump to discuss regional security, counter-terrorism cooperation and other matters of mutual interest. Ahead of the meeting, Trump had publicly praised the Pakistani leadership, referring to Field Marshal Munir as a “great leader.”
