Four Policemen Injured in IED Blast in Buner, KP as Attacks on Security Forces Surge

Four policemen were injured when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated near their patrol vehicle. Among the injured were Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Shahid Zada, the in-charge of the Ambela police post, along with Constables Noor Mohammad, Iftikhar Ali, and Altaf Ahmad. The explosion occurred in the Nawagai area of Buner, specifically at Kankai Chowk, as the police vehicle was conducting a routine patrol.

 

Israr Ahmad, the spokesperson for the Buner district police officer (DPO), confirmed the details of the attack while speaking to Dawn.com. "The injured officers were immediately transported to a nearby hospital, and their conditions are stable," Ahmad said.

 

Following the attack, the local police swiftly launched a search operation, led personally by District Police Officer Shah Hassan. Authorities are actively hunting the perpetrators responsible for planting the explosive device that targeted the officers.

 

This incident is the latest in a growing wave of attacks against police officials and security checkpoints, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan provinces. The region has witnessed a troubling rise in terrorism-related violence in recent months.

 

Just last month, Buner faced another terror-related incident when unidentified suspects torched a government primary school in Meragai and set off an IED while a police team was returning from the scene. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported in that attack.

 

Adding to the escalating violence, five militants wearing burqas and suicide vests launched an assault on Iqbal Shaheed Police Lines in Bannu on Monday. The attack claimed the lives of four police officers, who were martyred while courageously thwarting the militants' gun and bomb plot. All five attackers were neutralized by security forces.

 

The surge in attacks is largely attributed to the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which abandoned a fragile ceasefire with the Pakistani government in 2022. Since then, the group has intensified its attacks on security forces, particularly targeting police personnel and infrastructure in KP and Balochistan. These provinces have borne the brunt of Pakistan's recent spike in terrorism-related violence.

 

Authorities are on high alert, and security operations have been ramped up to counter the growing threat of militancy in the region. Nevertheless, the increasing frequency of attacks remains a serious concern for both the local population and law enforcement.
