Germany Hosts US-Ukrainian Talks Ahead of Berlin Summit on Ceasefire

Germany will host United States and Ukrainian delegations over the weekend for discussions on a potential ceasefire in Ukraine, ahead of a summit with European leaders and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy scheduled for Monday in Berlin, a German government official confirmed on Saturday.

A US official said that President Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner were travelling to Germany to participate in the talks involving Ukrainian and European representatives. Witkoff, who has led previous negotiations with Ukraine and Russia regarding a US peace proposal, was seen as a signal that Washington believes there is potential for progress.

The White House had indicated on Thursday that an official would be sent to the talks only if meaningful progress appeared possible.

“Talks on a possible ceasefire in Ukraine are taking place in Berlin this weekend between foreign policy advisors from, among others, the US and Ukraine,” a German government source said.

On Monday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is set to host President Zelenskiy along with leaders from across Europe for a summit in Berlin. The event marks another public demonstration of European support for Ukraine as Kyiv faces growing pressure from Washington to sign on to a peace plan that originally accommodated several of Moscow’s key demands.

Over the past few weeks, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany have been working to refine the US proposals. A draft disclosed last month reportedly included requirements for Kyiv to cede territory, abandon ambitions to join NATO, and accept restrictions on its armed forces.

The weekend talks in Berlin will likely focus on negotiating terms that could make the proposed ceasefire more acceptable to all parties, while maintaining international support for Ukraine amid ongoing conflict.
