The Saudi embassy in Washington has officially denied reports suggesting that the kingdom pressured former US President Donald Trump to launch attacks on Iran.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the embassy said Saudi Arabia has consistently supported diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a credible agreement with Iran. A spokesman emphasized that at no point did the kingdom attempt to influence US policy or direct the timing of military action.
The statement comes after an American newspaper reported that Trump’s strikes on Iran occurred even though US intelligence indicated that Iran did not pose an immediate threat to the US mainland in the next decade. The newspaper also highlighted expert concerns that using air power alone to alter a country’s internal political system has historically been ineffective.
Following the strikes, Trump confirmed that US ground forces would not enter Iran, with military objectives pursued exclusively through air and missile attacks. The Saudi embassy’s clarification seeks to distance the kingdom from any perception of involvement in the US decision-making process.
Analysts say the statement underscores Saudi Arabia’s continued emphasis on diplomatic solutions and regional stability amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
